NCAA 1-130 Re-Rank: Texas takes giant leap into top 25 after consecutive wins

Texas soared into the top 25 of the USA TODAY Sports college football Re-Rank after a 31-16 victory on Saturday against TCU, a win that ranks among the program’s best in years.

The Longhorns moved up 23 spots to No. 24 after winning their third in a row following a season-opening loss to Maryland. Also on the rise was Kentucky, which knocked off Mississippi State impressively at home to improve 17 places to No. 17. TCU was one of three teams to drop out of the top 25 after losing its second game in a row. Virginia Tech was another program falling after its shocking defeat to Old Dominion.

There was little movement among the top 10, however. Stanford and LSU switched spots, with the Cardinal hopping up a spot to No. 5 after winning at Oregon and the Tigers dropping to No. 6 after a win against Louisiana Tech.

Everything else remained the same: Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Ohio State join Stanford in rounding out the top five.

But it was a week of big moves in either direction for a number of teams on the Power Five level. Among those major-conference teams moving up at least 10 spots were North Carolina, Purdue, Virginia and Florida. Among those falling at least 10 spots were Virginia Tech, Boston College, Washington State and Kansas State.

New to the top 25: No. 17 Kentucky, No. 20 Brigham Young, No. 23 Texas

Out of the top 25:  No. 29 TCU, No. 38 Virginia Tech, No. 43 Boston College
