Iowa defensive lineman Brady Reiff arrested

Brady Reiff, a listed starting defensive tackle for the Iowa football team, was arrested for public intoxication early Saturday morning in Iowa City.

Reiff, 22, was arrested at 2:44 a.m., according to police records, and released at 9:30 a.m.

The University of Iowa addressed the incident Saturday afternoon. Athletics director Gary Barta said his department would gather additional facts and that Reiff, a 6-foot-3, 272-pound junior, would be subject to the UI's Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and the rules of the Hawkeye football program. 

Public intoxication is a simple misdemeanor. It would not be a surprise if Reiff faces punishment involving missed time for Iowa's Sept. 1 season opener against Northern Illinois, given head coach Kirk Ferentz's hard-line history on disciplinary matters.

Reiff posted 13 tackles, one sack and one interception last season in a backup role for the Hawkeyes. The undersized but gritty defensive tackle was seen as a possible replacement for departed three-year starter Nathan Bazata on the defensive line.

Defensive line is one of the Hawkeyes' deepest positions entering 2018. Junior Cedrick Lattimore and senior Matt Nelson have the inside track to starting roles — though Reiff was a listed starter, with Nelson out for the spring with an injury. The Hawkeyes expect Lattimore, Nelson, Reiff, Sam Brincks, Chauncey Golston and Garret Jansen to be in the defensive-tackle rotation this fall.

Ferentz will address reporters Monday and Tuesday in Chicago, as part of the Big Ten Conference's annual media days.
