IOWA CITY, Ia. — First, the Iowa athletic department affixed a Tigerhawk logo to midfield of Kinnick Stadium.

Now, it will paint the logo on the water tower northeast of the stadium, giving a segment of the fan base two victories for which it had long clamored.

The water tower paint job was announced by Iowa athletic director Gary Barta during a break in Friday's final football practice at Kinnick, to the delight of the roughly 10,000 fans in attendance.

“Seeing our iconic Tigerhawk logo on the water tower has been a topic of conversation since the day I arrived,” Barta said in a university news release. “Over the years we have continued to showcase our powerful brand. We are excited that beginning next season, in addition to the 70,000 fans in Kinnick Stadium, the logo on the water tower will be viewed by millions of people around the country and worldwide on television.”

The University of Iowa will fulfill the wish of many football fans by painting a Tigerhawk logo on the water tower northeast of Kinnick Stadium this summer.

The Tigerhawk on the water tower will match the logo on the Kinnick Stadium playing surface (black background, gold trim), which was added last summer. The Tigerhawk logo will stretch 24 feet wide and measure 15 feet, 5.75 inches in height. It will face southwest to be visible inside the stadium.

On the opposite side of the water tower, an "IOWA" logo in block lettering will appear. That will measure 24 feet wide and seven feet, 9 1/8 inches in height. The height of the water tower tank is 70 feet.

The painting will begin in June, Barta said, and is scheduled to be ready by Iowa's Sept. 1 season opener vs. Northern Illinois.

Tank Logos, from Franklin, Tennessee, will install logos at a cost of $25,000-30,000 to be paid for with athletic department resources.
