Brady Ellingson leaves Iowa Hawkeyes to join Drake Bulldogs basketball team

Brady Ellingson is staying in Iowa to complete his college basketball career.

The Wisconsin native announced Monday that he will play his final season at Drake after spending his first four years as an Iowa Hawkeyes shooting guard.

Ellingson has earned his degree and won't have to sit out, meaning he can play for the Bulldogs this winter under new head coach Darian DeVries.

Ellingson averaged 2.8 points in 26 games for Iowa last season, missing some time with a concussion. He made one start.

Ellingson can be a terrific long-range shooter, as evidenced by his 47.1 percent marksmanship from the 3-point arc in his sophomore season. He also is an outstanding ball-handler, with 81 assists vs. 41 turnovers as a Hawkeye.

Ellingson never got on track in his final season at Iowa, however, shooting only 41.2 percent from the field while seeing his playing time diminish.

Ellingson, a Dean's List student who was named academic all-Big Ten Conference this winter, announced last month that he was leaving the Iowa program in search of a fresh start. He'll get that under a first-year head coach.

Ellingson wore No. 24 at Iowa, but his Monday tweet showed him in a No. 22 Drake jersey.

Drake and Iowa are not scheduled to play each other next season.
