FRISCO, Texas — Iowa State and Iowa football fans will put their trash-talking aside for a while before the Sept. 9 Cy-Hawk football game at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.

They’ll celebrate the life of Bobby Elliott, one of just a handful of people who tie together both football programs.

“We’ll have a great celebration for Bobby,” Cyclones coach Matt Campbell said at the Big 12 Conference’s annual Media Days. “We’ll have a great plan.”

The late Bobby Elliott had several stints coaching at Iowa State.

Elliott died two weeks ago after a nearly two-decade battle against cancer, a fight that included bone marrow transplants, surgeries and multiple blood transfusions.

Campbell and Cyclone athletics director Jamie Pollard have discussed ways to honor the former ISU football assistant, former Iowa player and former Hawkeye assistant coach.

“What a phenomenal opportunity at the Iowa State-Iowa game to do something,” Campbell said.

Former Iowa State coach Dan McCarney shared a house with Elliott when they attended Iowa. McCarney spoke at Elliott’s celebration of life Saturday at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City.

McCarney said in a text to the Register on Tuesday that the Elliott family has mentioned possibly tying in a Bobby Elliott tribute to raising awareness for blood and organ donations. Bobby’s son, Grant, spoke about that Saturday at his dad’s memorial.

“I don’t know exactly what we’ll do yet,” Campbell said, “but whatever we do — we’ll have a great plan.”
