Iowa pulls sizable 2018 prospect Jack Plumb away from Wisconsin

Iowa’s recruiting strategy is winning in Wisconsin.

And its latest move pulled a gigantic prospect away from the Badgers on Monday afternoon.

Jack Plumb, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound player from Green Bay, Wis., announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes on the first day of the summer dead period following a weekend visit to Iowa City.

Plumb is a three-star tight end at Bay Port High School, but Iowa projects him as a future offensive lineman because of his length and mobility as a blocker. He chose Iowa out of 10 reported Division I offers, including Wisconsin, Michigan State, Arizona State, Minnesota and others.

“Jack and his high school coaches are realizing more and more by the day that his future is as an offensive lineman,” Scout.com Midwest recruiting analyst Allen Trieu told the Register last week. “Iowa has a great advantage there by having success with that body type and position convert inside.

“But it’s always tough to go into Wisconsin and beat them for an in-state kid, too.”

Multiple sources indicated Wisconsin was Plumb’s likely top choice ahead of his trip to the weekend Hawkeye Tailgater for prospective players. His commitment makes him the third offensive line recruit in Iowa’s 2018 class, following Jeff Jenkins from Crystal Lake, Ill., and Cody Ince from Balsam Lake, Wis.

Iowa also has two offensive linemen already committed for its 2019 class. Hawkeye commit Henry Geil, a 2018 running back, is also from Green Bay and goes to Preble High School.
