Meet our 2016-17 All-Iowa athletes of the year
The Des Moines Register announced the top performers in each of our 21 All-Iowa teams on Saturday.
The winners were selected by an All-Iowa voting panel that included top high school sports leaders across Iowa and the high school sports staffs of the Register and Iowa City Press-Citizen.
Here are the winners, announced at the year-end Des Moines Register Sports Awards ceremony in Des Moines:
Softball
Kendyl Lindaman, Ankeny Centennial
A repeat All-Iowa Elite pick who just won Big Ten Player of the Year honors at Minnesota, Lindaman clubbed a state-record 71 homers over five seasons. She hit 59 of those in her final four seasons. In her final season at Centennial, Lindaman hit 15 home runs with a batting average of .546. She was walked a state-high 55 times, with only one strikeout against her. Her on-base percentage of .711 was second best in Iowa. Lindaman had a fielding percentage of .985.
Baseball
Grant Judkins, Pella
The 2015 All-Iowa baseball player of the year, who is now at Iowa, guided the Dutch back to state as a pitcher and shortstop in 2016, hitting .421 while throwing 123 strikeouts in 76 1/3 innings. Judkins added a team-best six home runs on offense. He finished with a 10-1 pitching record and a 0.64 ERA.
Girls' cross country
Anna Hostetler, Mid-Prairie (Wellman)
Hostetler dominated this season, capping it off with a Class 2A title that saw her run the fastest time across all classes (17 minutes, 57.7 seconds). She won every meet she ran in this year and headlined a Mid-Prairie squad that delivered a third-place team showing at the state meet.
Hostetler finished as the top-ranked female in 2A and solidified herself as one of the most dominant cross country runners across the state, punctuated by her place on the All-Iowa Elite team.
Boys' cross country
Patrick Bose, Johnston
Bose won the Class 4A state cross country title in 15:37.2, the fastest time of any runner at the state meet, regardless of class. The senior is the first cross country state champion for Johnston. He was the top-ranked runner in 4A entering the postseason and was also named to the All-Iowa Elite team. He landed on the Iowa Association of Track Coaches 2016 Boys Elite All-State team, too.
Volleyball
Mackenzie May
May finished first among all Iowans who played at least 90 sets with 6.80 kills per set, and she was second in Iowa with 619 total kills. She led Dubuque Wahlert to a Class 4A state title over Pella with a tournament-best 75 kills on .458 hitting. And she earned a spot on the All-Iowa Elite team.
A UCLA recruit, May was named to the All-American second team and played on the U.S. Junior National Team last summer.
Football
Oliver Martin, Iowa City West
Martin put quite the finish on a record-breaking career. The West receiver led the state with 1,272 receiving yards, and he was second with 85 receptions. He finished his West career with the most receptions in state history (239), the most receiving yards in Class 4A history (3,449) and the most receiving touchdowns in 4A history (33).
A Michigan recruit and Army All-American, Martin thrived in the Trojans' playoff run, collecting 26 catches for 365 yards and four scores over the four games. He also added an 85-yard kickoff return touchdown in the state title game. His efforts earned him a spot one of three receiver spots on the All-Iowa Elite team.
Girls' swimming/diving
Sophie Sorensen, Ames
Sorenson has learned what it takes to make her mark. She helped Ames win the state team title this season while earning three first-place finishes.
Sorenson tied her own all-time Iowa best in the backstroke, swimming 54.61 seconds, to pace a 1-2-3 finish by the Little Cyclones. She was part of the record-setting 200-yard medley relay and the first-place 400 freestyle relay. She added a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.

Boys' swimming/diving
Zach Linder, Waukee
Linder, a senior, helped Waukee repeat as the state champions.
He was his team's only winner in two individual events. He beat defending champion Cameron Kelley of Cedar Rapids Washington by less than a second in the 200 freestyle. He finished first in the 100 freestyle by less than a second, improving on his fifth-place finish from last season.
Linder was a big part of Waukee's relay success, too. He guided the team's 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays to state runner-up finishes. Waukee won its first state team title last year, when Linder also competed in four events.
Girls' bowling
Hanna Duver, Des Moines Lincoln
Duver, who attends school at Indianola, won the Class 3A state championship in her fourth state meet. She was sixth as a junior and fifth as a sophomore. Lincoln placed fifth in the team standings. Duver finished her career as one of the most honored girls' bowlers in Des Moines high school program history. She finished with a score of 500 (234-266) at this season's state meet.
Boys' bowling
Alec Reseland, Urbandale
Reseland developed into one of the state's top bowlers. He led all bowlers in meet average (475.5) and won the Class 2A state title with a score of 535, a total that was 48 pins better than his nearest competitor. Reseland helped Urbandale win the team championship for a second consecutive year. His rising talent has been demonstrated by his performance in state meet competition. As a freshman, he placed 18th. As a sophomore, he took sixth.
Wrestling
Brody Teske, Fort Dodge
Teske capped a 46-0 campaign with his third-straight state championship and pushed his overall record to 132-0. The junior scored bonus points in every match he wrestled this season at 120 pounds and scored two pins and two technical falls en route to this year’s Class 3A state title.
Teske routinely dominated the field on his way to becoming Fort Dodge’s first three-time state champion. He’s scored bonus points in 77 of his final 89 matches. Next year, Teske has the opportunity to become a four-time state champ, something only 25 other wrestlers have ever done.
Girls' track and field
Joy Ripslinger, Davenport Assumption
Ripslinger won four races in Class 3A state meet: the 400 meters, the 800, the 1,500 and the 3,000. It was the first time an athlete showed such incredible diversity — and domination. The Arkansas recruit finished her career with nine state meet wins and helped Assumption capture its fifth consecutive team title, which was a record as well.
She was named the girls' outstanding performer at the Drake Relays. At that meet, she won the 800 and 1,500 and ran on the second-place 4x400 relay team.
Her fastest time in the 800 this year was 2:08.17, which was within 2 seconds of the state's all-time best run by Olympian Shelby Houlihan.
Boys' track and field
Isaiah Trousil, West Burlington/Notre Dame
The fastest kid in Iowa, Trousil boasts the top 100-meter time in the state (10:53), and he's tied for the state record in the 200 (21:56). He's the Drake Relays 100 champ and the 100 and 200 champ in Class 3A.
He has the fastest electronically recorded 100-meter dash time in Iowa history and the second-fastest 200 in state history. He’s a three-time Drake Relays champ in the 100, and a three-time state champion in both the 100 and 200.
Also a star running back at West Burlington/Notre Dame, Trousil is committed to play football and run track at Northern Iowa.
Girls' tennis
Anatta Charoenkul, Fairfield
Charoenkul was the unquestioned queen of Class 1A. Not only did she win the state crown, she didn't even lose a set until the title match against Olivia Fain. Charoenkul boasted a nearly spotless regular season, with a 17-0 match record and a 148-4 game record.
Charoenkul only lost three games as a freshman last year, when she was state runner-up to Fain.
Boys' tennis
Jiung Jung, Iowa City West
Jung won the Class 2A title this year, becoming just the fourth Iowan to ever win three individual championships in a high school career. And he placed fourth as a freshman. It's nearly impossible to win a lengthy rally against this Swarthmore recruit, who just doesn't let balls get by him.
Jung boasted a 25-2 set record and a 163-45 game record during the regular season.
Girls' soccer
Josie Durr, Solon
Durr was been a potent offensive threat all season. The Iowa signee currently led the state with 62 goals in just 16 games before missing Solon’s final five games with an injury. The Lady Spartan standout was known to put up absurd nightly totals, even as many as nine goals in one contest.
Despite missing the final five games, Durr still ranked second in the state with 132 points — 37 points more than the third-place total.
Boys' soccer
Marcos Vila, Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR
The Spanish exchange student from Madrid entered the postseason already having scored more goals (52) than any player in Iowa since at least 2011, and he finished with a state-leading 62 goals. Vila helped the Cadets to a 17-0 mark in the regular season and a third-place finish in Class 2A.
He was also third in the state with 27 assists.
Girls' golf
Maddie Hawkins, Dubuque Senior
Hawkins rallied on the second day of the Class 5A state meet by shooting a 4-under par 67. That score pushed her past three other girls ahead of her after the first round. Hawkins, a Bradley recruit, finished with a 74-67 — 141. She won medalist honors by a four-stroke margin. She helped her team place third at state.
Boys' golf
Willis Gaer, Des Moines Roosevelt
A two-time All-Iowa Elite team selection, Gaer earned the Class 4A fall golf state championship. He had a 145 total on rounds of 72 and 73. He finished with a 145 total, two strokes better than runner-up Brock Barnhart of Cedar Rapids Kennedy. He averaged 37.47 per nine holes last fall. For an 18-hole average, he tallied a score of 72.30. Also won the Des Moines City Open title in August. He’s four-year varsity competitor who led Roosevelt to three state meets.
Girls' basketball
Elle Ruffridge, Pocahontas Area
Ruffridge cemented herself as one of Iowa’s most decorated girls' basketball players ever, setting the state’s all-time career records in scoring (2,951), 3-pointers (466) and assists (802). The Missouri State recruit led all classes this season at 30 points per game and 157 made treys — 69 more than any other player in the state.
With Ruffridge at the controls, Pocahontas Area ripped off a 27-1 season, didn’t lose after Jan. 20 and ultimately captured the program’s second consecutive Class 3A title. Ruffridge poured in a team-high 22 points as the Indians rolled by Sioux Center, 61-38, in the final.
Boys' basketball
Connor McCaffery, Iowa City West
McCaffery led the Trojans to a Class 4A state title for his second crown in four years starting for West. He shot 51.8 percent from the floor and 41 percent on 3-pointers. The Iowa recruit averaged 19.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game.
He paced West with 19 points and eight rebounds in the title-game win over West Des Moines Valley and was named captain of the 4A all-tournament team. He was also named to the All-Iowa Elite team. He’s set to play basketball and baseball at Iowa.
