Iowa’s first 2018 recruit Mike Bruner decommits

The first commitment of Iowa’s 2018 recruiting class moved himself off the list on Tuesday night.

Linebacker Mike Bruner of Mequon, Wis., announced his decommitment ahead of the summer before his senior season.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound prospect from Homestead High School pledged to the Hawkeyes one day after an October visit to Iowa City, but can explore other options after reopening his recruitment.

“I feel that I committed too early and believe it is in my best interest to take more time to make my decision,” Bruner posted to Twitter on Tuesday.

Rivals and Scout rate Bruner as a three-star prospect at outside linebacker. Iowa and Iowa State were his only two known FBS offers, and his decommitment came two days after the Hawkeyes gained another 2018 recruit from Wisconsin in running back Henry Geil.

According to Rivals reporter Blair Sanderson, the Hawkeyes have lost the first recruiting commitment of their class in four of the last six years.

Iowa still has three commitments on its 2018 board: Illinois offensive lineman Jeff Jenkins, Iowa City West linebacker Dillon Doyle and Geil.
